Vocational School Board Holds Organizational And Regular Meetings

The Board of Education of the Gallia-Jackson-Vinton Joint Vocational School District held their Organizational and regular January meetings on January 8, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the Board Room on the Buckeye Hills Career Center campus.

DURING THE ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING, THE BOARD:

• The following members were given the oath of office for membership on the Vocational Board: Three-Year Term: Mr. Mel Carter (Gallia County Local School District), Mr. Robert Cornwell (Gallipolis City School District), Mr. Michael P. French, Jr. (Oak Hill Union Local School District), Mr. Virgil Hamilton (Jackson City School District), Mr. James Johnston (Wellston City School District), and Mr. Jeffrey A. Thacker (Vinton County Local School District).

• Mr. Randy Evans was elected as President of the Board, Mr. Jeffrey A. Thacker as Vice-President, and Mr. Robert Cornwell as the Legislative Liaison.

• The Board agreed to hold their regular meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. on the Buckeye Hills Career Center campus.

• Established the Board Service Fund.

• Adopted the Board of Education calendar for 2014.

• Authorized the Superintendent to appoint the Board’s designee to attend the required Public Records training for the 2014 calendar year.

• Approved the procedure of meetings of the Gallia-Jackson-Vinton JVSD Board of Education to be governed in accordance with Roberts Rules of Order, newly revised.

DURING THE REGULAR SESSION:

In the Adult Division, the Board:

• Awarded part-time, hourly contracts to the following: Phyllis Fisher, Karissa Martyn, Jeff Rhodes.

In Personnel Matters, the Board:

• Employed Betty Adkins as a substitute teacher for the remainder of the 2013-2104 school year.

In other matters, the Board:

• Authorized the Superintendent to employ legal counsel for the District as needed until the January 2015 regular meeting.

• Authorized the Superintendent as Administrator and Purchasing Agent for all general funds and federal programs for the District until the January 2015 regular meeting.

• Authorized the Treasurer to request tax advances from any of the county auditors at any time during the year when tax monies are available and/or when funds are needed.

• Authorized the Treasurer to purchase membership with the following organization(s) for the District: Ohio School Boards Association.

• Approved the increase of the rate of pay for part-time/substitute cooks to $7.95 per hour effective January 1, 2014 in compliance with Ohio’s Minimum Wage law.
