Transportation Security is Important to Ohio Homeland Security

securityOHIO – Ohio Homeland Security, in partnership with local, state and federal agencies, work to protect Ohio’s most critical infrastructure. The transportation systems sector is one of 16 sectors identified as critical infrastructure by the Department of Homeland Security.

Ohio’s current transportation system consists of 264,756 lane miles of roadway; 43,000 miles of interstate; 43,412 bridges; 4,526 miles of Class I railroad tracks; 716 miles of navigable waterways; 163 public use airports; and 60 transit systems.

“When you consider those numbers, you can understand the size of this task,” said Executive Director Richard Baron, Ohio Homeland Security. “Compromise of the transportation system could have detrimental, cascading effects on a system that has the responsibility of the moving of millions of passengers and millions of tons of goods across Ohio and the nation.”

All critical infrastructure sectors depend on the viability of the transportation sector. A majority of the transportation sector is privately owned and that is why Ohio Homeland Security works so closely with private partners across the state to mitigate any potential risks.

An engaged and aware public is crucial in deterring these threats and maintaining the safety and security of all Ohioans. If You See Something, Say SomethingTM – Contact Ohio Homeland Security at 1-877-OHS-INTEL1-877-OHS-INTEL or for emergencies, call 911.
