U.S. Term Limits Defends Ohioans from Attack on Term Limits Law

unnamedAnticipating a legislative attack on Ohio’s voter-approved term limits law, U.S. Term Limits (USTL) has initiated a series of informative mailers to constituents of potential term limits foes running for the Ohio General Assembly.

The first set of mailers, which went to voters in House districts 28 and 79, points out that Republican candidates Jonathan Dever and Kyle Koehler, respectively, have not signed the term limits protection pledges they were sent by USTL. Both of their Democratic opponents have signed the pledge to oppose any change to the current eight-year limits.

“Even though 70 percent of Ohio voters say term limits should be kept at eight years, aspiring career politicians are still trying to water down the law,” said USTL President Philip Blumel. “It’s time they put their constituents’ preference above their own self-interest.”

Blumel is referring to efforts by the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission to weaken or abolish term limits. The Commission features a lobbyist-led committee that frequently discusses ways to impair term limits.

“If the Commission’s idea is modernization, it shouldn’t be reaching back to a time before term limits, when power was more concentrated and politicians were impossible to unseat,” Blumel said.

2014 polling by the University of Akron shows that citizen support for Ohio’s eight-year term limits currently sits at 70 percent, and has only risen since they were enacted by popular referendum in 1992.
