Bill Johnson Statement on Papal Address to Congress

image001(2)WASHINGTON – Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) issued the following in regards to the comments from Pope Francis during his address to a Joint Session of Congress:

It was truly an honor to be in the House Chamber this morning and welcome Pope Francis to the United States, and for the first ever papal address to Congress. I applaud Pope Francis for his charity across the globe and his passionate fight on behalf of the poor and the unborn. It is clear he wants to use his influence for positive changes across the globe. I was particularly struck by his eloquent remarks on the importance of the family being the “building blocks” of America. Earlier in his speech, the Pope discussed the importance of unity overcoming polarization, and found that a very fitting sentiment, given the deep political divisions in Washington that prevent progress. His call for hope, and his plea that the voice of faith must continue to be heard are important, and his reminder that a nation can be great when it defends liberty like President Lincoln did resonated very much with me. Pope Francis finished his address by stating, “God Bless America.” Indeed, and fitting words to end an historic morning.
