Southern Local Announces Dates

stars-storyRACINE-The Southern Local School District is preparing for a busy spring. The district has announced dates for several upcoming events that will be of interest to both participating students and community.

The district announced that March 24th and March 28th, originally designated as Spring Break days, will now be make-up days and school will be in session. Students will still have Good Friday, March 25th off as part of a diminished spring break.

Superintendent Tony Deem noted, “The end of the year is quickly approaching. We continue to have many great things going on in the classrooms. Over the winter we had successful Literacy Night activities and just recently had a very successful science fair.”

“We look forward to a great spring! We hope that we can continue to provide our students with the best tools to become successful citizens and also provide them with opportunities outside the classroom that they may not otherwise experience.”

Thursday, March 10 Southern will hold district-wide Parent-Teacher conferences from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The times were moved up one hour to accommodate other activities this same evening.

Mandated OHSAA Parent Meeting

Also, March 10 the Prom Committee will meet at 6 p.m. and at 5:30 all Spring Athletes and their parents must attend the state-mandated OHSAA meeting. OHSAA Bylaw 3-1-4 stipulates that the principal shall conduct a mandatory, preseason program with all student-athletes who wish to

participate in the upcoming sports seasons, their parents and booster club officer(s). The meeting will be for all spring sports grades 7-12.

The Winter Sports banquet will follow at 6:30 p.m. for all athletes participating in winter sports programming. The administration hopes that having the spring meeting and banquet back-to-back will accommodate more parents on just one night.

Kindergarten, Pre-school Registration

Kindergarten registration will be March 29-3o. Preschool registration is slated for March 31-April 1. Two weeks prior to registration, parents can call the school office to schedule an appointment.

Parents will need to bring their child’s birth certificate, Social Security card and shot records to the school and the child must be present for screening. Parents can make plans now to have immunizations in place by the date of registration.

Previously, public preschool served 3- and 4-year olds, however, this coming year state guidelines have changed. Only 4-year olds can be served in the public setting such as the one at Southern.

Alumni Game

The 8th Annual “Big Fooze Night” Southern Alumni basketball game will be held Saturday, March 12 here at Southern High School beginning at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5:15. There are plans for two men’s games that will bring back the stars of the past along with a women’s game featuring some of the best Southern Tornado basketball gals. Cheerleaders are also asked to attend and perform.

TB Screening

March 14, Southern will host the health department for TB screening beginning at 7 a.m. TB skin testing will be for grades 4, 8, 11, 12 for college, and staff.

On March 22, the Southern PTO will host a “Cookies and Canvas” fundraiser in the cafeteria at 6 p.m. and on March 24 elementary classes will hold their Spring parties at 1 p.m. March 24 is also the end of the third nine weeks.

The prom was set for April 23rd and the Reconnecting Youth Variety Show was slated for April 24th.

Testing in the district will begin at the High School in the next few weeks, while elementary testing will follow in the ensuing weeks. In each case, the district asks parents to reassure students to reduce anxiety and affirm that taking the test is a serious undertaking. Reassuring students to “do their best” and follow the slogan “Do your best on the test” is all that anyone asks.

Parents are urged to see that their children eat a healthy breakfast the day of the test! School principals will be sending home testing dates for the respective grade levels.
