Richard “Dick” Vales, 88, of Long Bottom, Ohio (Formerly of Elyria) passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born August 5, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Helen and Albert Vales.

Dick was was a member of the Coolville United Methodist Church. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School in 1947 and attended John Carroll University under the GI Bill after serving in the Army in Korea from 1951 to 1953.

He retired in 1988 after 35 years as an Engineer at York International Corporation. He was awarded several patents for heating equipment.

Dick will be lovingly remembered by: his wife of 67 years, Joyce Kucera Vales; his sons, Robert (Rena) Vales of Coolville, David (Rhonda) Vales of Long Bottom; his daughter-in-law, Joann Vales of Grand Rapids, Michigan and son-in-law, John Northrup of Long Bottom; 7 grandchildren, Carey (Chris) Soda of Grand Rapids, MI, Eric (Renee) Vales of Dorr, MI, Amanda (Justin) Mays of Parkersburg, Michelle (Michael) Jewell of Tacoma, WA, Dana and Cory Vales of Leander, TX and Joey (Heaven) Vales of Long Bottom; 7 great-grandchildren, Caroline, Carter and Charlie Soda of Grand Rapids, MI, Ethan, Logan and Grady Vales of Dorr, MI and Brooklyn Vales of Long Bottom.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his brother, Albert Vales; son, Richard (Ric) Vales and daughter, Deborah (Deb) Northrup.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Coolville United Methodist Church with Pastor Phil Thomas officiating.
