GALION, Ohio – University of Rio Grande track & field head coach Bob Willey has announced the signing of Galion High School’s Joseph Borders for the 2014 season.

Borders, a 6-foot-2, 310-pound thrower, record highs of 145-feet in the discus and 45-feet in the shotput during his prep career for head coach Todd Roston’s Tigers.

“I feel very ecstatic to have been given this opportunity,” said Borders. “I’ve been wanting to compete collegiately since the seventh grade.”

Steve Gruenburg, Rio Grande’s Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, shares Borders’ excitement.

“We’re thrilled to have him in our program,” Gruenburg said. “He should be able to help us in the throwing events this year as a freshman. He’s a very good student and great young man.”

Borders, who is going to focus on Physical Education as his area of study, was drawn to Rio Grande due to the students, despite receiving an offer from Tiffin University.

“The students here are very welcoming and made me want to go here immediately,” Borders said. “I feel that I can improve on my speed to help the team and will have to compete using my best potential.”

Borders is the son of Jammy and Angela Borders of Galion.
