USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame Member comes to Kick off Syracuse Table Tennis Club

SYRACUSE – On Sunday March 9 John Tannehill came to the Syracuse community center to help kick off the community center’s table tennis club.

Tannehill is a Meigs county native who started making headlines with his table tennis skills at a young age. He was a part of the 1969 U.S. World Team and is in the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame.

To start the event Tannehill gave a brief history of his career in the game and also gave a brief history of how table tennis has changed through the years. After he and his son played a match. Tannehill easily beat his son despite his son’s best efforts. When the match was over Tannehill offered a few tips on table tennis and answered some questions before opening it up for members of the community to challenge him.

Joy Bentley helped plan the event, she said local kids have been showing interest in table tennis and wanted to start a club. Many local kids are looking forward to participating in the club. Bentley said, “I have been collecting the tables for table tennis for some time to get this club started.”

The club will be open on Sundays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Syracuse community center.
