Names released along with further details in Friday fatal crash

POMEROY – One man is dead following a fatal car crash on Friday night in Meigs County.

The Gallipolis Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol has been investigating the one vehicle crash that occurred around 10:10 p.m. January 14, 2017. The crash happened on State Route 143.

The names of the driver and passenger have been released by law enforcement officials. According to a statement sent to the Meigs Independent Press, Richard Barnhart, 30, of Pomeroy was driving a 1998 Audi Northbound on State Route 143. Jesse T. Carr, 26, also of Pomeroy was his passenger.

According to investigators, Barnhart “drove off the right side of the roadway, went airborne, and struck a utility pole.”

Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing seat belts. Carr was fatally injured and died at the scene. Barnhart was transported to Holzer Medical Center ER by Meigs County EMS. Barnhart’s injuries were listed as “incapacitating.” He was reportedly transported to another medical facility in Columbus, Ohio.

Meigs County Sheriff’s Office also assisted the OSP at the scene.

The roadway was completely closed as a result of the crash for approximately two hours and the crash remains under investigation.
