Appalachian Gypsy to open in Middleport

MIDDLEPORT, Ohio – A new business is coming to Middleport featuring local crafters and artisans.

The Applachian Gypsy is owned by Heather Evans. Evans saw the opportunity to create a shop with her unique vision. Evans purchased the building which was formerly the Yellow Umbrella. She had been a vendor in that shop and found the news of the business closing “devastating.” So, instead of just wishing someone would do something, she decided to do it herself.

Evans said the vision for the Appalachian Gypsy is a place to highlight local artisans instead of them depending on craft shows or various events. This is a consistent, stable place to show off their work for sale. The focus of the shop will be homemade, vintage and even some antique items. Some of the items and vendors for sale include wood burned creations, wreaths, sign makers, cows milk soap and so much more. Evans said that local 16-year-old artist Halo Rife will also have artwork for sale at Appalachian Gypsy.

Currently, the Appalachian Gypsy has more than 15 local vendors. The response has been so great that Evans has had to create a “wait list” for vendors to have space.

Evans said she talked with other Middleport business owners before making the move to purchase the building and open the shop. She said Middleport has solid traffic flow through that part of the village and Middleport just needs people to, “Just take the risk.”

Bringing new life into the downtown of Middleport is a passion for Evans along with promoting support of the local economy in Meigs County. She said it is something that is important to her. Her mother, Vicki Farrell owned and operated Buttons and Bows for years. Evans is now looking to write her own chapter of local business ownership with Appalachian Gypsy.

On Friday, June 4, Appalachian Gypsy will have an open house and ribbon cutting with the Meigs County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. The shop will be open for business beginning Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m. and following hours of normal operation after that. Hours of operation are: Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.
