Substance use treatment and support needed now than ever before

POINT PLEASANT, West Virginia – Seeking treatment and support for those struggling with substance abuse is more important than ever before. Between June 2019 and June 2020, more than 83,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the U.S. alone. This is the highest number of drug overdose deaths ever recorded in the U.S. during a one-year period and is an increase of more than 21% from the previous year.

Not only are drug overdose deaths at an all-time high in the U.S., but individuals living with substance use disorder also face a much greater risk to other areas of their physical health. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that those “who use opioids at high doses medically or who have [opioid use disorder] face separate challenges to their respiratory health.” Alcohol consumption has also seen a concerning increase during the pandemic. Data shows a 54% increase in alcohol sales and a 262% increase in online alcohol sales during March 2020.

Pleasant Valley Hospital provides a service, BreakThru, to help individuals cope with the cycle of substance use disorder by managing withdrawal or detox symptoms within the hospital on a medical unit. The hospital setting provides the safest environment, ensuring a successful transition to ongoing recovery treatment and aftercare.

BreakThru continues to achieve excellent patient outcomes and surpasses established industry benchmarks in readmission, relapse rates, and discharge plan compliance due to the quality of care provided by Care Managers and Medical Staff. Patient outcomes exceed the benchmarks of national organizations such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Upon discharge, BreakThru patients have many options available for their continued recovery. BreakThru Care Managers have created relationships within the community that provide residential treatment, outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), and/or partial hospitalization (PHP). Service staff work with the patient to create the discharge plan that will best benefit them.
