Southern Holds Awards Assembly for Class of 2014
On Friday, May 23, the community of Racine gathered in at Southern High School to watch as the graduating class of 2014 were honored for their effort and achievements throughout high school. 46 different scholarship funds handed out money to the seniors at Southern High School to assist them as they prepare to head to college in the fall, and various awards and honors were presented at the ceremony.
The annual keys were presented in each subject, with Ryan Daugherty receiving the Social Studies key, Ciera Marcinko and Amy Bennett the Home Economics key, Christopher Yeater the English key, Wyatt Jarrell the Science key, Nathan Leamond the Spanish key, Lacey Hupp and Taylor McNickle the Math key, Christopher Yeater and Nathan Leamond the Quiz Bowl key, and Cameron Harmon a special Work Study key, for his four years of dedicated service doing work study at the school. Other awards presented included the Holzer Clinic Science award to Wyatt Jarrell, the John Phillip Sousa award to Nathan Leamond, the Future Farmers of America (FFA) Outstanding Senior award to Jacob Dixon, a Citizenship award to Jamie O’ Brien and Wyatt Jarrell, and an Activities award to Sarah Lawrence. Jordan Huddleston and Trenton Deem were honored with the Larry R. Morrison Athlete of the Year award for females and males, respectively. The Southern High School FFA branch, National Honor Society branch, and band also honored all of it’s seniors.
After all awards were presented, many different local scholarships were presented to the graduates at Southern High School. These scholarships are awarded to help seniors cover the cost of colleges they will attend in the fall. Joyce Weddle, a recipient of many scholarships, was extremely grateful for the money she received. “I’m appreciative that people give out money to people that need it,” she said. Wyatt Jarrell, upon receiving the John Gray Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship in memory of his former football teammate who passed away in 2011, said that he felt “privileged to receive the scholarship.”
After the awards ceremony, Southern High School Principal Daniel Otto thanked the community for attending and the seniors were dismissed for pictures.
