Pomeroy Library Hosts COSI Science Spots Event
During the summer months, it’s easy for kids to forget what they’ve learned throughout the school year. The Meigs County District Public Library is on a mission to help prevent that. Each summer, the library hosts its Summer Reading Program, to keep kids active in their education over the summer. The program, designed for kids from ages 1-12, is designed to “promote reading during the summer,” according to Emily Saunders, the Children’s Services Coordinater of the Meigs County Library. On Saturday, June 21, the Meigs County Library held a COSI Science Spots event in conjunction with the COSI museum, located in Columbus, Ohio, at the Pomeroy Library. The event ran from 11 A.M. until 2 P.M., and featured hands-on science experiments and activities for kids.
In addition to this event, the Summer Reading Program has a Summer Food Program, with free lunch provided through a grant with the Meigs County Senior Citizen Program. The district library also holds story times each week at the Racine branch on Mondays at 2 P.M., and at the Eastern branch on Tuesdays at 2 P.M.
The program is a big hit in the community of Meigs County, and attracts many participants. Nanette Swab, mother and preschool and kindergarten teacher at Mid-Valley Christian in Middleport, enjoys bringing her kids to the program. “We always try to participate in the library programs,” she says. “We went to COSI in Columbus a few years back and the children really enjoyed it.” As a teacher, she is a fan of the educational aspect of the events, combining the opportunity to learn with fun activities for the children.
The Summer Reading Program will run through July 18th, with many more events scheduled. On Wednesday, June 25, Nancy The Turtle Lady will be at the Pomeroy Library at 11 A.M. and 2 P.M., displaying her array of reptiles for the kids. On Wednesday, July 2, the program will feature the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery from Athens visitiong the Pomeory Library at 2 P.M. The Racine branch will host Brandy King, the Meigs County canine officer, on Wednesday, July 9, at 2 P.M., with a canine demonstration taking place. Air Evac from Parkersburg will also be bringing down their helicopter to show the kids, and there will be various outdoor science experiments. The program will end on Friday, July 18, with a pool party at the London Pool in Syracuse from 6 P.M.-9 P.M.
