Bill Johnson Statement on House Passage of WWII Memorial Prayer Act
WASHINGTON – Congressman Bill Johnson (R-Marietta) released the following statement following the passage of the WWII Memorial Prayer Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Johnson originally introduced this legislation in the House, and today, the House approved the Senate version sponsored by Senator Rob Portman (R-OH).
“As 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of French coastline on June 6, 1944 to liberate France and the rest of the European continent from Nazi occupation, President Franklin Roosevelt prayed a national prayer – to provide solace, comfort, and strength to our soldiers, as well as to the families and our country as a whole. Dating back to the previous session of Congress, I’ve worked tirelessly to have the words of Roosevelt’s prayer, ‘Let Our Hearts Be Stout,’ installed on a plaque or inscribed on the memorial as a tribute to the Greatest Generation,” Bill Johnson said.
“I’ve always been humbled by, and grateful to, those who fought in WWII, and to all of those brave Americans who have answered our nation’s call to protect our freedom. The WWII Memorial Prayer Act is a small, but momentous and fitting tribute to our veterans. The plaque would be paid for by private donations at no additional cost to the taxpayer. I’m thankful the legislation has passed both the House and Senate, and I urge President Obama to immediately sign this bipartisan bill into law.”
