Honor Project Awards $50,000 to the Arthritis Foundation

CLEVELAND, OH – In a ceremony September 4 at the Global Center For Health Innovation, the Arthritis Foundation received a check for $50,000 as part of the Honor Project.

The money is part of more than $6 million distributed yesterday by the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to 226 charities from around the state. The organizations were selected following an extensive application process.

The funds will be used to provide people with arthritis in Ohio and their caregivers with the latest education, tools and resources for improving joint health and managing pain. In Ohio, 2.6 million people, or 31 percent of the state’s adult population, have been diagnosed with arthritis. In Northeastern Ohio, nearly 1.3 million people of all ages have been diagnosed.

Arthritis is the nation’s leading cause of disability and costs the state of Ohio $5.7 billion annually in medical expenses, lost earnings, and reduced productivity. Nationally, arthritis costs our economy $128 billion annually.

The Honor Project is what’s known as a “cy pres” (sigh-PRAY). If there are unclaimed funds in a class action settlement, a judge can use the cy pres doctrine to distribute funds that remain for beneficial use.

The Honor Project Trust stemmed from litigation pursued by the Ohio Attorney General Office in State of Ohio, et al. v. American International Group, Inc., et al. Upon settlement of all claims with the defendants, excess proceeds remained.

The Attorney General’s Office requested that Judge John J. Russo, the presiding judge in the case, distribute the funds under the Court’s equitable powers. The Honor Project Cy Pres Initiative was created outlining how the funds would be applied for and distributed.

The distribution Thursday of $6 million is the third and final phase of the Honor Project. In the first phase nearly $2.6 million was distributed to the companies involved in the litigation and companies who could have potentially suffered damages. In the second phase, more than $2.4 million was provided to companies that agreed to use the money to hire new employees, thus reducing the state’s unemployment.
