Portman Calls for U.S. Strategy to Defeat ISIS Ahead of President’s Address

image001(3)Washington, D.C. – In advance of President Obama’s foreign policy address tomorrow, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) called on the Administration to develop a comprehensive strategy to defeat ISIS and address global challenges that carry significant consequences for U.S. interests and global stability. Portman also noted that the strengthening of ISIS is an unfortunate consequence of the current lack of strategy from the Administration.

“The strengthening of ISIS demonstrates the serious consequences of a disengaged and passive foreign policy. When America retreats from its global leadership role, terrorist groups like ISIS are quick to fill the void,” Portman stated. “As we wait for the President to outline his long overdue strategy, ISIS is a growing danger to our national security, to our allies, and to innocent people across the Middle East. The President must lay out a comprehensive plan to defeat ISIS and put in place a longer-term strategy to ensure that ISIS and similar terrorist organizations do not continue to threaten global peace and stability. It is time for the President to lead so America can lead. We need a plan that addresses the military, intelligence, political, and economic components necessary to defeat this latest threat to the region and our national security.”
