Portman and Brown Introduce Bill to Create Central Database to Identify Causes of Harmful Algal Blooms
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) introduced legislation to create a central database to help determine the causes of harmful algal blooms as well as best ways to combat them. The Great Lakes and Fresh Water Algal Blooms Information Act will require the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to create an electronic database for the voluntary submission of research and information by accredited entities on the causes of and corrective actions being taken with regard to algal blooms in the Great Lakes, their tributaries, and surface fresh waters. NOAA will report to Congress annually on the comprehensive findings and actions that were submitted. Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH-05) introduced a House companion bill today.
“Ensuring we have the best scientific data possible is an important part of preventing another water crisis,” Portman stated. “This central database will help scientists, cities, and local officials identify the causes of harmful algal blooms and work to prevent them from affecting our drinking water.”
“Ohio is home to world-class scientists and experts who are committed to keeping consumers safe,” Brown said. “This database would help ensure that the best and most up-to-date research and information on algal blooms is available to the public. We must be vigilant in our work to protect Lake Erie and our drinking water supply.”
