6-State Trooper Project Emphasized Speed, Safety Belt, OVI
COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Highway Patrol issued eight OVI arrests, 19 safety belt citations and 343 speed citations in the duration of the latest 6-State Trooper project. The initiative focused on the Interstate 70 corridor, beginning on October 10 at 12:01 a.m. and ending October 12 at 11:59 p.m. The Indiana State Police, Pennsylvania State Police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol participated in the enforcement.
“Motorists who drive aggressively or impaired are extremely dangerous to Ohio’s roadways, and the Patrol was out in full force this weekend to help deter these negative behaviors,” said Colonel Paul Pride, Patrol superintendent. “In addition, we want motorists to remember that buckling up significantly increases their likelihood of surviving a crash. There’s no excuse not to wear a safety belt.”
From 2009 to 2013, there were a total of 61 fatal crashes on Interstate 70 in Ohio, including 14 that involved an impaired driver. So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes, including three that involved alcohol and/or drugs on this stretch of road.
The 6-State Trooper Project includes the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Kentucky State Police, Indiana State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, West Virginia State Police and the Michigan State Police.
It is a multi-state law enforcement partnership aimed at providing combined and coordinated law enforcement and security services in the areas of highway safety, criminal patrol and intelligence sharing.
