AAA: Tips for Drivers to Prepare for first Arctic Blast of the Season

image001(1)Last winter AAA responded to more than 4,600 calls from stranded West Virginia motorists. The harsh weather conditions last year challenged both drivers and vehicles. AAA responded to a 13 percent increase in total calls and experienced increases across the board for all types of service requests.

Cold Arctic temperatures have moved into the area, the high temperature tomorrow is expected to be in the mid 30’s and the low is forecasted to drop into the 20’s, with cold temperatures to continue in the days ahead.

Five easy steps for drivers to be prepared for the winter-like temperatures:

1. Check your antifreeze: AAA recommends for this region antifreeze should provide protection to 30 to 40 degrees below zero. Without the proper protection, freezing can occur resulting in substantial engine damage. Antifreeze should be checked every few years because over time the fluid becomes acidic, which can damage the radiator and heater core resulting in leaks.

2. Check the fluid in the windshield washer reservoir: washer fluid needs to be a winter blend with adequate amounts of alcohol to prevent freezing which can crack the reservoir.

3. Check your battery life: batteries generally have a life of three to five years. Members can call AAA for a free battery check.

4. Tire air pressure: cold temperatures can affect the pressure in your tire. Make sure all tires are properly inflated before the temperatures drops.

5. AAA Membership Card: check your card and make sure it hasn’t expired. Renew or join by visiting the website AAA.com, or by calling or visiting any local AAA office.
