Meigs County Home Rule Committee Campaign for Safer Water
MEIGS COUNTY: Today, Community Rights expands in Ohio as residences of Meigs County launch their campaign for a county charter by direct initiative of the people.
Meigs County, like other counties across the state, is plagued by the disposal of toxic waste from oil and gas extraction into injection wells within the county. These injection wells threaten aquifers and drinking water sources, risk explosions, contaminate the soil, and threaten local ecosystems.
There are currently 11 injection wells in Meigs County, but an application for permit has been filed to establish yet another injection well on State Route 248 between Chester and Bashan Road. Also, the Portland barge dock has been approved, and approval to transport the frack waste by barge is likely forthcoming since that is Green Hunter’s intended purpose for the dock.
The Meigs County Home Rule Committee (MCHRC) is happy to announce their initiative to expand community rights in Meigs County. According to the Ohio State constitution the purposed county charter is the only option Meigs County voters have to protect our water from the continued and growing threat of injection well frack waste contamination.
Placing this charter initiative on the ballot and before the voters this November will finally give the residents of Meigs County a voice as to whether or not we want this continued contamination and threat to our water supplies.
Public meetings of the Meigs County Home Rule Committee are held every Thursday at 5:30 in the Board Room of the public library in Pomeroy. The public is cordially invited and encouraged to participate with them in this critical cause.
