Dorothy Mae Casey, 89
Dorothy Mae Casey, 89, received her wings and was heaven bound, non-stop at 8:20 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2016.
She was born November 21, 1926 in Middleport, Ohio to James and Anna Singer who preceded her in death.
She wed Robert Morris Casey of Gallipolis, Ohio on February 19, 1946. Robert preceded her in death in August 2003 after 57 years of loving marriage.
Dorothy was a devoted and loving mother of five children, William (Billy), Hattie Ann, Roberta, Cynthia and Morris.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; siblings, Florence Moore, Rita Blair, Jane (Allen) Harper, Helen Owen, Roland (Valerie) Singer, Sandra (Bill) Alexander and a multitude of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by daughter Cynthia, her granddaughter Camille Stokes, maternal grandmother, Carrie Payne, siblings: Marcia Sawyers, Anna Margaret Oiler, James Singer, Joan Layne, and Richard Singer.
In June of 1998 Dorothy along with Ms. Barbara Scott led the effort to establish the John Gee Black Historical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio to establish a cultural and educational center to preserve the contributions and history of black Americans of Southeastern Ohio. Dorothy served as a strong and effective leader as the Center’s Executive Director until her death.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday September 16, 2016 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home 810 2nd. Ave. Gallipolis, with Pastors Melvin O. Freeman and Christian Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Street Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
