POMEROY – A Sunday evening fire has left three families without their homes just a week before Christmas.

According to Pomeroy Patrolman, Tre Wallace, the call came in at 5:14 p.m. with the report of a structure fire. Pomeroy, Middleport and Rutland Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene on Spring Avenue.

Within the structure are three apartments, all of which were rented according to property owner, Rick Patterson. He said that in the apartment where the fire started, the occupants were not home at the time. No one was injured and a dog which was in one of the apartments was safely rescued.

“We are thankful everyone is out and okay,” Patterson told the Meigs Independent Press.

Firefighters were able to quickly get the fire under control and put the fire out, but will be on the scene for some time checking the entire structure for possible hot spots.

Patterson said one of the families has an infant and another tenant has several children. While Patterson said the extent of the loss was yet to be determined, it looks as if those families have lost everything just Christmas.

Meigs EMS Medic 5 and Rutland Squad 44 were on the scene in case assistance was needed. Initially Meigs County Sheriff’s Office was also the scene.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet. As of publication, crews were still on the scene.
