Annual St. David’s Day Celebration set

205 E Cross St, Oak Hill, OH 45656

Oak Hill, OH – Each year at this time, Welsh Societies around the country gather to celebrate the life of the Patron Saint of Wales, Dewi Sant, or St. David. And while they don’t drink green beer like the Irish do to celebrate St. Patrick, Welsh-Americans do celebrate the simple life that St. David was known for. A Bishop of Wales, he is thought to have lived in the 6th century, and his death on March 1st is officially set as St. David’s Day. He lived a simple life and practiced asceticism, teaching his followers to refrain from eating meat and kindness to animals.  His symbol, also the symbol of Wales, is the leek.

Join us on Saturday, March 4th at noon at the Presbyterian Church in Oak Hill, for a luncheon and celebration. Welsh exchange student from University of Rio Grande, Marah Hager, will launch her “ebook” on her experiences at Trinity Saint David in Carmarthen, Wales, fall semester. Marah won the 2016 North American Wales Foundation Lloyd Family Scholarship with this exciting project. She will entertain with several Welsh songs and readings on St. David. The afternoon will end with the singing of traditional Welsh hymns led by Robert Powell.

Tickets for the event are currently on sale and can be purchased through the Madog Center for Welsh Studies at the University of Rio Grande 740-245-7186. Adults are $20 and children 12-7 are $8 and must be purchased in advance.
