Deputy’s Notebook for Feb. 6 to Feb. 16, 2017
Editor’s note: The Meigs County Sheriff’s Office Deputies respond to all sorts of calls. The notebook is a listing of the public record of those calls.
On Feb. 6, 2017 Meigs County Deputies investigated identity theft and a scam.
Investigate complaint – Deputies took a report from a female stating that she had been the victim of identity theft. The caller stated that a credit card had been issued in her name without her knowledge. The incident is under further investigation.
Investigate complaint – Deputy Perry took a report about a check scam that originated from Canada. The victim stated that she received a check for $9,000 from an address in Wisconsin. A report was taken and the authorities in Wisconsin were notified.
Disorderly Male: Sgt. Jones responded to Hills Food mart about a disorderly male. The male was cited for disorderly after warning and was informed that the property owner had barred him from the property.
On Feb. 7, two Deputies dealt with a domestic dispute.
Domestic Dispute: Sgt Jones and Deputy Stacy responded to Gold Ridge for possible domestic in progress. On their arrival, it was determined that it was only a verbal dispute and the female and male were separated for the night.
During Feb. 8, the Deputies handled several cases including auto theft and disorderly conduct.
Traffic stop- After receiving a tip about a vehicle driving recklessly, Deputy Riley located the vehicle and stopped it in Racine. After identifying the driver, James Harmon, 33, he was found to have an active warrant from Meigs County Court, and he was driving on a suspended driver’s license. Harmon was arrested on the warrant and transported to Meigs County Sheriff’s Office pending his court appearance. Harmon was also charged with left of center, driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Disorderly- Sgt Griffin took a report of a male subject causing a disturbance at the Racine Post Office. The investigation is ongoing and charges may be filed.
Disorderly- Deputy C. Patterson and Deputy Riley was dispatched to a residence on State Route 124 because Andrew Robinson was at the residence causing problems. After deputies arrived on scene it was determined that the argument was verbal and no violence had taken place. Robinson was removed from residence.
Auto theft- Sgt Griffin took a report from Casey Pickens, Syracuse, who reported his 2006 Hyundai Tiburon, taken from his residence. The vehicle was located on Buck Run Rd and had been destroyed by fire. Witness reports seeing a Black SUV in the area when the vehicle was stolen and also in the area when the vehicle was burnt. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call 740-992-3371.
Neighbor complaint- Deputy Snoke took a report from Frances Haggy, Pomeroy, who reported having trouble with a neighbor over a civil transaction the two had previously had. Deputy Snoke talked with all parties involved and resolved the situation.
Theft- Deputy Snoke took a report from Daniel Lantz, Harrisonville, who reported the theft of some letters from a sign he had in his yard. Witness reports seeing a female in a black car remove the letters. Anyone with any information on this incident is asked to call 740-992-3371.
Deputies assisted Meigs EMS and responded to an alleged domestic dispute on Feb. 9.
Assist EMS – Deputy Myers responded to a residence on State Route 681 to assist EMS with a female who had quit taking her meds and was causing problems at the residence. Deputy Myers assisted with female and she was transported to Meigs ER without further problems.
Domestic Dispute: Deputies King, Babb, Jones responded to 41160 State Route 7 Reedville reference to an alleged domestic in progress male suspect armed with a knife. On their arrival, all parties had separated and the male, Travis Koenig, 26, from Reedsville, was arrested on domestic violence charges and placed in the Meigs county jail pending a court appearance.
Another alleged domestic dispute led to one arrest by Deputies on Feb. 10.
Domestic – A man at a residence on State Route 124 in Letart Falls called the office to report that his ex-wife, Wanda Adkins, 49, from Racine, came into his house and assaulted him, she is still there and refusing to leave. Deputies responded. Adkins was still there when they arrived. After speaking with both subjects, Adkins was arrested for the alleged domestic and will be held in jail until her initial appearance in court.
Investigations including a burglary were among the calls Deputies responded to on Feb. 11.
Burglary – Gary Gibbs, Tornado Road, Racine called the office to report that he had returned home from an evening out and discovered that his house had been broken into. A deputy was dispatched to the scene. When the deputy arrived, Gibbs advised that he had checked around the home and the only thing taken was firearms. The scene was processed and the incident remains under investigation.
Investigate – While Deputy Brandy King was at the 124 Mart on State Route 124 for fuel she was advised of an upset woman outside that had possibly been assaulted. Deputy King contacted the female, who refused to give specific information about the assault. While speaking with her it became clear that she was either impaired or injured from the assault. Her speech was slow and her ability to balance was effected. After speaking with a family member by phone who advised that this was not a normal state for her she was transported to the Holzer Meigs ER to be checked out. No further action was taken by deputies in this incident.
On Feb. 12, Deputies were dispatched for loud music and a 911 hang up call.
Loud Music – The office received advising someone in a camper on Cross Street was playing loud music and had been since 10 p.m. A deputy arrived in the area and no music was heard. The deputy contacted several males at the camper playing corn hole. They were advised to keep the noise down and to keep the music low if they turned it back on. No further action was taken on this call.
911 hang-up – Dispatch received a call from EMS advising of a 911 hang up call from a cell phone. The phone call was tracked and came from the area of 372 to 388 Salem St in Rutland. Deputies were dispatched and patrolled the area. Nothing was found, no further action was taken.
Another burglary was reported on Feb. 13.
Burglary: Deputy Stacy responded to 55520 Third Avenue, Reedsville for a possible burglary. A report and statement taken from the victim and the investigation is ongoing.
On Feb. 14, Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious male and other calls.
Suspicious Male: Sgt. Jones and Sgt. Mohler responded to 39981 State Route 681 in reference to an unknown male on the callers porch. On their arrival, the male subject was identified and taken to his residence. The male’s wife advised that he had taken improper medication.
Suspicious Vehicle: Sgt. Jones and Deputy Stacy responded to the Racine Library for a vehicle parked in the roadway. On their arrival, they spoke with a male and advised him to go home.
Unauthorized equipment on Vehicle: Deputy Stacy and Sgt. Jones responded to U.S. 33 about a call of a vehicle dragging a hose. Once the vehicle was located and stopped the driver was asked if his vehicle came equipped with its own fuel hose. The driver stated “No” and was then asked where the one that was stuck in the gas tank of his car came from. The driver then exited his vehicle scratched his head and stated “I can’t believe I did that!” It was then determined that the driver had gotten fuel at the Richland Ave. Speedway in Athens and had used his debit card to pay for the gas. He sat back down in his car to stay warm, heard it click off and just drove off losing his gas cap in the process. The driver promised to return the hose to Speedway and was released.
On Feb. 16 another burglary was reported.
Burglary: Deputy Jones responded 55520 Third Ave, Reedsville for a possible Burglary. Report and statement taken.
Arrest on indictment: Sgt. Jones arrested Michael B. Smith on an indictment issued from the Meigs County Court of Common Pleas.
