Local Special Olympians to have send off, participate in games
POMEROY, Ohio – Meigs County has approximately 41 athletes from Meigs, Eastern and Southern Local School Districts scheduled to participate in the Special Olympics hosted by Alexander High School on April 26, 2019.
The games run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are preceded by a parade of athletes held on-site (Alexander) teachers, administrators and students from Meigs Local will be gathering at Meigs Middle School at 7:30 a.m. on Friday (rain or shine) to give the athletes an exciting send off. Students and staff in the Meigs schools have made personalized signs for every athlete from Meigs County and the middle and high school will have students and staff lining the road out of the middle school to hold signs and cheer on the athletes as the bus pulls out. The team name is Meigs Magic.
Karla Brown, special education coordinator for Meigs Local School District, said she is hoping to have an escort for the athletes when they return to Meigs County. “I haven’t officially ok’d this, but I’m hoping to have a police escort meet the team bus at the Meigs County line on the way home and escort them back to school. Carleton school was asked to participate but had to decline due to logistics involved in picking up some of their students, but their athletes will have personalized signs as well. Our 8th grade media team did interviews with the athletes and those will be broadcast at the middle school Friday morning. The kids (athletes) have an incling of what is going on, but no idea how big we hope it will be,” she said.
