Drew Webster American Legion Post 39 to hold Memorial Day Observances

POMEROY, Ohio – The Drew Webster American Legion Post 39 will be holding various Memorial Day observances including the annual remembrance program at the riverfront parking lot in Pomeroy.

The service is set for noon with Douglas Dixon, as the main speaker. Dixon is a Navy veteran and also serves presently as Meigs County Veterans Service Officer. The Southern Marching Band will play several patriotic melodies.

American Legion Post 39 will also be holding observances at various area cemeteries throughout the day beginning with 9 a.m. at the Rocksprings Cemetery. They will then go to Beach Grove at 9:30 a.m. followed at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be an observance at the Bridge of Honor at 10:30 a.m. The veterans will then hold the service at noon at the riverfront in Pomeroy. Following the Pomeroy observance, at 1:30 p.m. they will have a service at Meigs Memory Gardens and one following that at 2 p.m. at the Chester Cemetery. The Southern Band will also be playing at the Chester Cemetery. American Legion Post 39 will conclude their observances at Hemlock Grove Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

Memorial Day, first known as Decoration Day, was started after the Civil War as a time to visit cemeteries, decorate them with flowers and remember the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers.
