Philip Roberts
Philip Roberts, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, friend, and public servant, passed away on August 24, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on September 8, 1944, Philip’s life was a testament to resilience and kindness.
Philip was known for his warm heart and generous spirit. His career as a professional engineer and surveyor showcased his commitment to his work and his community. He began his professional life working for the State of Ohio, then as the elected county engineer for Meigs County, Ohio, before returning to the Ohio Department of Transportation. He also owned and operated a private professional surveying and engineering business in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Philip was also a man consumed by his hobbies, about which he was passionate. He was an avid amateur radio operator, discovering that hobby as an 11-year-old boy, receiving his first license from the Federal Communications Commission in 1960, and remaining a daily devotee of it for the remainder of his life. He was an accomplished hobbyist, earning numerous “honor roll” recognitions. He enjoyed discovering new facts, new stories, and was a student of history.
He also found joy in watching birds pass by his lakeside window, and his enthusiasm for stories about his grandchildren was infectious.
He was a member of Patriot Lodge #496 of the Freemasons, a member of the Gallipolis Elks Lodge #107, the Gallia County Gun Club, and the American Radio Relay League. He was a graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and Southern High School in Racine, Ohio.
Philip’s legacy is carried on by his wife Karen Roberts. He is survived by his son Steve Roberts, daughter-in-law Thayer Roberts, and his grandchildren Samantha and Owen Roberts.
Philip touched the lives of many with his wisdom, knowledge, humor, and generosity. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Philip’s life will be held on September 4, 2024, at Willis Funeral Home in Gallipolis, Ohio, with calling hours from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., followed immediately by a Masonic service, memorial service, and graveside ceremony; Pastor Aaron Young will be officiating the memorial and graveside services. The family invites all who knew him to join in honoring his memory and the impact he had on so many lives.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Philip’s honor to the Gallia County Snack Pack, an organization focused on relieving child hunger in our community, at P.O. Box 169, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631.
Philip Roberts will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his love, strength, and the positive influence he had on everyone around him.
