Scioto County Launches Labor Day Weekend DUI Enforcement Blitz

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio – The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office plans to increase its presence on the roads this Labor Day weekend.

Sheriff David Thoroughman stated that the initiative is part of a traffic enforcement blitz aimed at reducing impaired driving during the holiday. He explained that through Sept. 1, additional deputies will patrol the roads to enforce traffic laws.

“A safe environment for residents and visitors will always remain a top priority for the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office,” said Thoroughman. “Our deputies continue to focus on coordinated efforts with other law enforcement agencies and community partners to prevent deaths caused by impaired driving.”

The sheriff explained that a grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office funds the extra enforcement hours.

“Impaired driving is still a major cause of preventable crashes and fatalities. From 2023 to 2024, Ohio experienced a 13% rise in alcohol-impaired driving fatalities,” Thoroughman said.

He urged drivers to stay safe by buckling up and following traffic laws throughout the holiday weekend. He also advised reporting suspected impaired drivers to 911 when it is safe to do so.
