Shooting at Youngstown Hospital Sparks Police Investigation

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio  – The Youngstown Police Department is investigating a shooting at St. Elizabeth Health Center’s main campus.

Officers arrived at the hospital around 11:30 a.m. Thursday to assist the hospital’s police department.

Fire Chief Barry Finley confirmed that authorities responded to a shooting at the hospital.

Investigators have not released details about the incident yet, but the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office confirmed they were contacted after the shooting.

Youngstown detectives said that while they cannot share information at this time, there is no threat to patients or the public.

Jeffery Green, who had an appointment at the hospital, said he couldn’t get inside because police blocked the entrances.

“I came about 12 p.m. for my allergy shots, and they had everything blocked off with the police, all the entrances up and down the side of the street,” Green said.

Mercy Health released the following statement in response:

“The safety, security and well-being of our patients, visitors and staff is a top priority for Mercy Health. An isolated incident occurred on Aug. 28 within a contained area of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital Emergency Department, and our team responded quickly and appropriately.

We are actively working on an investigation with the Youngstown Police Department. Our facility remains a safe and secure environment where our teams continue to deliver compassionate care. Out of respect for patient privacy, we will not be providing further comment at this time.”
