Police Man charged after shooting sister, firing at officers during barricade situation at Columbus home

COLUMBUS, Ohio —  A 19-year-old man accused of choking and shooting his sister now faces charges after allegedly firing at officers during a standoff at a southeast Columbus home Saturday afternoon.

According to Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant, the city’s public safety department received a 911 call around 2:35 p.m. reporting a domestic violence incident at a residence in the 800 block of Gilbert Street.

The caller reportedly told dispatchers that her brother had choked her. According to the release, the suspect could be heard in the background saying, “Come get me… I got something for you all.”

As officers were on their way, another call reported that the brother had shot his sister, the release stated.

When officers arrived, they searched for the sister, unaware that a family member had already taken her to the hospital, the release said.

Police reported that the suspect, later identified as Nathen Thorn, was found upstairs in the home. He allegedly refused to come downstairs and, shortly after, fired multiple shots toward officers. At least one officer returned fire, according to the release.

Thorn allegedly barricaded himself upstairs, prompting officers to request SWAT and hostage negotiators to respond to the scene.

Before their arrival, officers managed to convince Thorn—who was not injured—to surrender peacefully at 3:30 p.m., according to the release.

Police said the sister, identified as an adult, underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

One officer suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being released, the release stated.

Thorn faces at least one count of felonious assault in connection with the incident, according to police.

The Columbus Division of Police’s Major Crimes Investigation Team is handling the shooting investigation.
