Two people from Johnstown are facing charges for allegedly assaulting a man following an argument over a dog.
Rebecca Kelly, 43, and Ethan Kelly, 24, are charged with aggravated assault after reportedly beating up a man who got into an altercation with them about their dog, according to a criminal complaint. On August 24, officers were dispatched to Rose Street in Johnstown to investigate a physical altercation between neighbors.
One of the victims stated that Ethan’s dog had gotten into their yard, and when they attempted to pull the dog out, Ethan allegedly became agitated and yelled and cursed at her. The woman said she just went back inside her house, but Rebecca showed up 20 minutes later and began ranting and swearing at her again.
According to the complaint, the woman and her boyfriend were arguing with Rebecca when Ethan went over the fence and began to “jump” on him. Rebecca and Ethan reportedly beat the victim in the head and ribs. The man was sent to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center due to his injuries. Both victims stated that they had previously had concerns with the Kellys regarding the dog.
Police spoke with Rebecca over the phone, and she stated that Ethan and one of the victims had a physical altercation, but that the victim had thrown the initial punch. She also submitted police images of scratches and red marks that the victim allegedly left. Police said the images showed scratch marks on Ethan’s lower back and a red mark on Rebecca’s neck.
According to the complaint, officers then questioned Ethan about the alleged attack. He told police that the victim had been ranting at Rebecca, and he “did not appreciate” what he was saying, so he started arguing back. Ethan told police he and the victim only shoved each other.
On August 27, police got the victim’s medical records and discovered that the claimed assault resulted in a cracked rib and a potential concussion.
Both Rebecca and Ethan are charged with severe assault and harassment. Rebecca was freed on $20,000 unsecured bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 11. Ethan has yet to be tried.
