An Akron man and woman were sentenced to 24 to 28 years in jail for severely starving and abusing a child in their care, according to the Summit County Prosecutors’ Office.

The abuse reportedly occurred between 2020 and 2024.

Angela Smith, 43, and Jason Smith, 48, both pled not guilty to the allegations in July.

“No child should ever have to endure what this young boy went through. Protecting children requires all of us, neighbors, educators, and institutions, to stay alert and act. I want to thank Summit County Children Services, the Akron Children’s Hospital staff, and the Akron Police Department for their dedicated work in ensuring this child’s safety and bringing Angela Smith to justice.”

Summit Co. Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich

Thank God for Children’s Services in our area . Those precious beautiful children deserve to be loved and feel secure. Thank you for discovering this abused child and finding out about his terrible undeserving, unappreciative parents. You probably saved his life.
