Police in Chicago’s southern suburbs arrested two of five men suspected of being armed Monday morning and were looking for the other three.

Matteson police said they got a 911 call early Monday morning about several people acting suspiciously in a residential neighborhood near Central Avenue and Vollmer Road. According to authorities, the people in question were equipped with firearms.

Officers searched the area and discovered the people driving out of Matteson in various cars, according to police.

Matteson cops attempted to pull over the cars, but they refused to stop, according to police. The automobiles were discovered abandoned shortly after, and CBS Skywatch video showed that at least one of them crashed.

Matteson police said that two individuals were in custody as of 8 a.m. A hunt for any remaining suspects was still underway.

Tinley Park police, who were aiding, claimed earlier that there were five people at large at the time, with three remaining on the loose as of 8 a.m.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order for Harlem Avenue and Vollmer Road while officers looked for the armed males. Everyone in that area of Frankfort Square was instructed to stay at home with their doors locked.

Kevin Hedemark, public information officer for the Will County Sheriff’s Office, said the area where the shelter-in-place was issued is quite busy, with the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre, a major Amazon fulfillment center, and an elementary school nearby.

A search perimeter of around three miles was established in each direction. Illinois State Police, Will County Sheriff’s Police, and Mokena Police were also there.

Drones and search dogs have been dispatched. Hedemark stated that all police agencies involved were searching the area to verify it was clear.

The shelter-in-place order was removed later on Monday morning. However, by 10:45 a.m., there was no longer a shelter-in-place order in effect. Matteson police asked everyone to be vigilant and to phone 911 immediately if they saw anything strange.

Anyone with information about the investigation is encouraged to call the Matteson police non-emergency line at 08-503-3130 or submit tips through the Matteson village website via Tip411.
