A woman was detained after police say she broke into numerous homes in a Luzerne County area.

Butler Township Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Old Airport Road on a report that a woman had illegally entered the house of an 80-year-old victim.

The woman was identified as Monika Pasternak of Passaic, New Jersey, who entered the home through a rear door, confronted the victim, and demanded money in bad English, according to police.

According to officers, the victim was able to persuade the woman to leave but then witnessed Pasternak enter the back door of a neighbor’s home. Then, investigators alleged, a second victim who lived nearby observed Pasternak inside their garage before fleeing into the woods.

Police said they began looking for Pasternak, who was eventually discovered inside a cabin. Pasternak exited with a hatchet above her head, swinging it angrily, according to the release.

Pasternak was arrested and charged with both burglary and criminal trespassing.
