First Flakes Ahead: Plains Poised for Mid-November Snow as Pattern Turns Colder

NOAA’s October 24, 2025 outlook points to a mild start to November across North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas, with temperatures running above normal. But the pattern looks primed to flip by mid-month as the jet stream dips south, opening the door to colder air and increasing the odds for snow in the northern and central Plains between November 15 and 24.

That setup could bring light snow accumulations to parts of Nebraska and South Dakota, while colder, breezier conditions expand into Kansas and Oklahoma heading into Thanksgiving week. Forecasters aren’t calling for a blockbuster winter storm yet, but even modest snow or a thin glaze of ice could cause slick travel—especially along key corridors like I-29 and I-80.

For now, fall still has a firm grip across much of the Plains. However, the region’s first meaningful taste of winter looks just around the corner, and holiday travelers may want to keep an eye on changing conditions as November progresses.
