GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Eastern North Dakota woke to a hushed, foggy morning Saturday, with thick mist especially west of the Red River Valley. The quiet interlude will be short-lived. A strengthening system rolling out of the Plains is set to crank up winds on Sunday and deliver widespread showers by Monday, ushering in a breezy, wet stretch just ahead of Halloween week.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Grand Forks say the dense fog will lift by midmorning, opening the door to sunshine and pleasantly mild temperatures. Highs will reach the low 60s, accompanied by a steady south wind that could gust between 25 and 30 mph through the afternoon.
Sunday brings increasing clouds as a warm front slides north, keeping highs in the low 60s while the breeze intensifies. Gusts near 35 mph are possible by late day, a sign of the more active pattern setting up.
Showers will expand Sunday night into Monday, with the most persistent rain likely along and east of the Red River. Totals of a quarter to half an inch are expected. Drivers on U.S. 2 and I-29 should plan for slick roads and patches of reduced visibility during the Monday morning commute.
Cooler air filters in from the northwest by Tuesday, dropping highs into the mid-50s and bringing spotty light showers before gradual clearing returns midweek. Halloween looks dry and on the chilly side: expect temperatures in the 40s around dusk with light winds—comfortable conditions for trick-or-treating.
A cooler November is waiting in the wings.
