Cookeville, TN — A bomb threat reported late Friday near the old courthouse in downtown Cookeville was quickly determined to be unfounded, local officials said.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Cookeville Police received a call at about 10 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, alleging a device was near the courthouse on the Square at 300 E. Spring Street. Officers and deputies moved in immediately, secured the vicinity, and conducted a thorough investigation.

Authorities later confirmed the threat lacked credibility, identifying the call as a false report originating from outside the area. No explosive devices were discovered, and no injuries were reported during the response.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that the search for the source of the hoax is ongoing. While no details about the caller have been released, officials emphasized that filing false emergency reports is a serious criminal offense.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity or threats to local law enforcement without delay.
