Pocatello, Idaho — The National Weather Service office in Pocatello has expanded and extended winter weather advisories across broad swaths of central and eastern Idaho, warning that accumulating snow and difficult travel will continue into Monday afternoon.
One advisory, covering the Frank Church Wilderness, the Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, the Sun Valley area, and the Big Lost Highlands/Copper Basin, remains in effect through late Sunday night. Snowfall at elevations above 7,000 feet is projected to reach 6 to 12 inches, while lower valleys—including Stanley and Ketchum—can expect roughly 1 to 4 inches. Exposed ridges may see gusty winds up to 35 mph.
A second advisory runs from 3 a.m. Sunday through 3 p.m. Monday for the Bear River Range, Caribou Range, Big Hole Mountains, and the Centennial Mountains near Island Park. Forecasters call for a general 3 to 6 inches of snow, with amounts up to 12 inches possible above 7,000 feet. Wind gusts could approach 40 mph in these areas.
Travel impacts are likely, especially over mountain passes, where slick roads and reduced visibility may develop during heavier snow bursts. Drivers should slow down, allow extra braking distance, and plan for a potentially challenging Monday morning commute.
