PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Saturday breaks chilly and serene across southern New England, with inland lows dipping into the 30s and lower 40s. A frosty glaze coats lawns in western Rhode Island, while Providence hovers just above freezing — a sure sign that Halloween week is at the doorstep.

The National Weather Service office in Norton calls for wall-to-wall sunshine today with highs near 56°F and a light northerly breeze. Expect crisp, very dry air along I-95 and through the Blackstone Valley — perfect for yardwork, Halloween decorating, and outdoor errands before the weather pattern turns more unsettled. Sunday stays seasonable and brighter for much of the day, though some clouds begin to filter in as winds ease and moisture slowly noses in from the south.

Clouds thicken on Monday, putting Providence under a gray blanket with highs around 52°F and a slightly more humid feel. The next disturbance arrives Tuesday, bringing about a 40% chance of light showers from the morning into midday. North winds could gust near 20 mph, adding an extra bite to the air. Damp roads and slick leaves may slow travel on Route 146 and around downtown intersections during the commute.

Rain amounts look modest, but this marks the beginning of a choppier stretch into Halloween. Wednesday remains mostly cloudy with just a few peeks of sun, and another round of showers is possible by Thursday — lining up with trick-or-treat preparations.

Bottom line: Enjoy the calm, cool weekend before the clouds roll in.
