A man has been arrested and charged with grand theft after police say a woman used a tracking app to locate the man who stole her purse from a supermarket parking lot.
According to a probable cause affidavit from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Anthony Rengasami, 45, of Sunrise, was arrested on October 26 after a month-long investigation into the theft outside Quince Supermarket, situated at 6820 North University Drive.
According to detectives, the incident occurred on September 22, when the victim claimed that her pocketbook had been stolen from her shopping cart while she was loading groceries into her car. According to surveillance footage from the supermarket, Rengasami approached the cart with three youngsters dressed in red school uniforms, took the handbag, and then walked into the store to purchase.
According to investigators, the victim later tracked her lost phone to a house known as Rengasami’s, near the 5800 block of Northwest 14th Court in Sunrise. After identifying the vehicle, the victim sat in her car and looked up Rengasami’s face on his Facebook profile photo. The victim provided authorities with screenshots and photographs that linked him to the theft.
During a photo lineup on October 16, the victim recognized Rengasami as the person she saw in the parking lot. The stolen items, worth $3,050, included a Tory Burch pocketbook, a Coach wallet, a Lexus key, a Galaxy S23+ smartphone, and $750 cash.
When detectives arrived at Rengasami’s home, he acknowledged to removing the handbag, saying he kept the phone and cash but dumped the rest. Police claimed he voluntarily gave over the stolen Galaxy S23+ and admitted to keeping a $363 gold bracelet.
Rengasami was taken into the Broward County Main Jail and charged with one count of grand theft involving $750 to $5,000. His bond amount was set at $2,500.
