A shooting in the Liberty City neighborhood stemmed from a $40 debt the suspect owed to the victim, according to the city’s police department.
On Saturday, Miami police arrested Steven Green, the accused gunman, who is 56 years old.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday inside the Biscayne Court apartment building at 5211 NW 17th Avenue.
According to the arrest report, the victim informed officers that he was at a nearby liquor store when Green, from northwest Miami-Dade, arrived in a white sedan.
The victim confronted Green, also known as “Blackey,” about a $40 phone bill debt, which led to a confrontation in the apartment building’s stairway.
According to authorities, Green pulled out a pistol. According to the report, the victim told police that he asked Green, “What, are you going to shoot me?” Green did exactly that, shooting six shots into his abdomen before fleeing.
Green stated to authorities that he was the subject of a robbery after the victim asked him to charge his phone. According to the investigation, Green claimed the victim pulled a knife on him and demanded money.
According to police, Green initially said he handed the victim money but later changed his tale, claiming he didn’t because he had “nothing to give.”
The report adds that Green “placed himself on the scene at the time of the incident but denied all other allegations.”
Green was being jailed without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on four counts, including attempted murder.
