Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews are investigating a deadly house fire in Herndon that occurred early Thursday morning.
Fire authorities said crews were dispatched to the 1500 block of Shellbark Place, where they saw flames coming from a home. While examining the house, firefighters uncovered two bodies.
“The entire house was engulfed in flames,” a neighbor named Michael told 7News.
Michael said he and his two young kids saw flames flying out of their bedroom window and subsequently discovered their neighbors were inside.
“I said to [the firefighters], ‘Please tell me they made it out,'” Michael confided. “And, yes, they couldn’t provide any information. However, we later learned that they had not made it out. So it’s sorrowful.”
“They were very reserved and kept to themselves, so we didn’t know them very well, but they were very nice,” another neighbor told 7News.
The couple’s next-door neighbor, who declined to go on camera, told 7News that they attempted to extinguish the fires with a garden hose before Fairfax County firefighters arrived.
Amanda, who lives next door with her two kids, expressed her regret to 7News about her neighbors.
“They’re very good neighbors,” Amanda said. “When we were throwing out candy for Halloween, they would stop by. They were quite sweet. They cared a lot about the kids, but they were also really good neighbors. People were saddened to see or learn that they were no longer with us.
No other information about the victims has been published.
