According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, an 18-year-old was detained after hitting a man with his vehicle and repeatedly driving over his head before fleeing the scene.
Jerrell Noah Jones was arrested on Monday for the Sept. 16 aggravated battery on Silver Star Road near Belco Drive.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a witness told investigators that a guy had moved between her car and Jones’ silver Dodge Dart when Jones turned the wheel and drove toward the man, knocking him over and driving over his corpse.
According to deputies, the vehicle then reversed over the man’s head, drove over him, and then reversed again before racing away.
“It’s sort of crazy.” I never thought something like that could happen, but it does at the end of the day,” remarked one resident.
The man had a cracked skull and several brain bleeds as a result, according to officials.
The sheriff’s office identified the Dodge Dart using traffic cameras and acquired a search warrant, which was executed during a traffic check on September 30.
According to the affidavit, deputies questioned Jones, his girlfriend, and another person in the vehicle at the time of the aggravated battery.
The girlfriend told authorities that she suspected Jones purposefully ran over the victim, and when she asked why, he said, “I thought he had something.”
The second individual in the vehicle had done a Google search for “ways to cover up a hit and run.” According to the affidavit, all text communications from that day were wiped from their phone.
“To go forward, back up, and go forward again—that’s a little bit absurd,” another nearby resident said after hearing about the charges.
Jones denied ever seeing the victim or having any participation in punching someone during an interview, according to the affidavit.
Deputies attempted to speak with the victim, but he looked to be in an “altered mental status,” according to the affidavit.
Jones is charged with attempting second-degree murder.
Jones faced a court on Tuesday and was denied bond.
“Because of the charge, you are not entitled to a bond,” the court stated at the hearing, appointing a public defender to represent him.
Jones is still in the Orange County Jail without a bond.
