A man was sentenced to three decades in prison after being found guilty of plotting to harm participants at a Central Oregon climbing festival two years ago.
Samson Garner, 41, a Portland resident, received a 30-year sentence on Monday. In September, a jury convicted him of 26 felony charges, including attempted murder, stemming from a plot to carry out a mass shooting at Smith Rock State Park.
Garner was arrested in October 2023 when Portland police learned of his plan to shoot random people at the Smith Rock Craggin’ Classic, a popular climbing event near Bend.
Garner was arrested by Deschutes County law police in a trailhead parking lot near Tumalo. According to police, he had an AR-15 and two handguns in his car, along with ammunition and a tactical vest loaded with bullets.
Portland Police Chief Bob Day applauded law officers, saying their efforts prevented a terrible tragedy.
