A man was sentenced to eight years in prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to attempted murder in the shooting of a 16-year-old boy near the Magnificent Mile last year.
According to prosecutors, Jasean Butler, 20, fired several bullets at the teen around 4:45 p.m. on August 2, 2024, at the corner of Wabash Avenue and Chicago Avenue. Bullets injured the youngster in the shoulder, as well as a 24-year-old man standing close.
According to court records, a Chicago police surveillance camera and security cameras at a nearby Chick-fil-A both captured footage of the incident. A CPD surveillance officer who analyzed numerous video feeds determined that the gunman fled onto a southbound Red Line train at the State-Chicago stop, according to a police report.
Officers stopped the train near Roosevelt shortly after the incident and detained Butler because he matched the suspect descriptions. According to CPD, the rucksack next to him had a loaded 9-millimeter handgun.
Butler agreed to plead guilty to attempted murder on Thursday in exchange for an 8-year sentence from Judge Michael Clancy, according to court records. He must serve 85% of the sentence before being eligible for parole.
