A New Mexico man was sentenced to more than 21 years in prison on Wednesday, Nov. 19, for trafficking almost 1.5 kilos of fentanyl, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
According to court documents, 43-year-old Edgar Omar Martinez of Anthony, New Mexico, was detained on March 14 after the FBI discovered about 17,000 fentanyl pills from his vehicle.
Martinez obtained the medications from a co-conspirator two weineks before the seizure, according to additional investigations. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Martines was anticipated to receive $3,200 for his role in the narcotics trafficking scheme.
Martinez was charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl and one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl on April 9. On August 26, he pleaded guilty to both charges.
The FBI investigated the situation. Kyle Myers and Michael Williams, assistant United States attorneys, prosecuted the case.
