Three Venezuelan migrants, all teenagers, were part of a group that attacked, murdered, and robbed a homeless man in the Loop over the weekend, according to prosecutors and a Chicago Police police report.
The victim, who has not been identified, was outside Exchequer Pub, 226 South Wabash Avenue, when a group of around nine people strolled past him at 5:28 a.m. Sunday, an officer wrote, citing security footage.
According to the allegation, members of the group, including one who looked to be armed with a knife, physically attacked the man.
According to the investigation, the film captured the armed intruder making a “swiping down stabbing motion” toward the victim. Another attacker approached the victim from behind, kicking him in the back and knocking him to the ground.
According to the report, the group then fled the scene, racing down Wabash and then onto Jackson before continuing north on State Street to the Red Line.
A passerby discovered the victim’s body around two hours after the incident and phoned 911. EMS took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead from a single stab wound to his upper back.
According to the story, investigators discovered a bike at the murder scene that was ridden by one of the attackers. They also went through the victim’s stuff, which included a Best Buy shopping cart, a bag of assorted items, a box full of tools, a skateboard, and his pet cat, which was turned over to Animal Care and Control.
According to the report, on Monday afternoon, a Chicago police officer working in a video camera room in the Near West (12th) District noticed a group of people traveling around Cermak and Western who appeared to be the assailants. Patrol police discovered the gathering at the Western Pink Line station and apprehended six persons on the platform minutes later.
Wuinayker Rodriguez, a 16-year-old Venezuelan migrant, was among those arrested, according to the police report and a source. The report stated that officers discovered a knife in his right sleeve. Rodriguez was charged with murder and mob action in connection with the incident.
Two 14-year-old boys, both identified as Venezuelan migrants, have also been prosecuted. One is accused with first-degree murder, and the other with robbing the victim.
Rodriguez was set to appear at a detention hearing on Tuesday afternoon. We anticipate obtaining further information regarding the allegations against him following his court appearance. A completely updated narrative will be published at that time.
