Columbia police said Wednesday that a man charged with rape in 2018 was apprehended in St. Louis.
Antonio E. Bates, 58, of St. Louis, was arrested on a first-degree rape warrant on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department. According to a CPD spokesman, Bates will be taken back to Columbia for trial.
Bates was not on the inmate lists for the Boone or St. Louis County jails on Wednesday morning.
According to court documents, on July 24, 2018, officers responded to a sexual assault in the 800 block of Ann Street at 3 a.m. According to police, the victim was outside near an apartment’s garden area when he began a chat with Bates, whom he knew nothing about.
Police claim Bates assaulted the lady after forcing her to the ground. A sexual assault examination turned up DNA that matched Bates, according to the statement.
