A resident of The Villages has been detained in connection with a violent incident involving a dementia patient whom she had hoped to defraud.
Kara Lynne Johnson, 48, of the Village of Chitty Chatty, drove the woman, who has dementia, from Mississippi to the Days Inn on State Road 44 in Wildwood, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Johnson had fled with the woman “with the intent to defraud her of her money.” The report did not disclose Johnson’s relationship with the woman.
Johnson, who was detained in 2022 at the Lighthouse Point Bar & Grill, had been drinking extensively in the shared motel room and was “inebriated.” The dementia patient attempted to persuade Johnson to quit drinking for the night. Johnson was evidently upset and began “shouting profanities and making threatening statements about causing physical harm” to the woman. He “got into her face” and later “pushed the bottom of her chin with a fist.”
Johnson also became “irate” with the phone in his hotel room. She pounded and banged the phone until it became inoperable. Johnson insisted that the Days Inn personnel bring her a new phone, and they complied. However, the hotel’s general manager contacted police enforcement to report the violent occurrence.
Johnson was arrested on Monday night and charged with felony violence and minor criminal damage to property. She was booked into Sumter County Detention Center and released after paying a $3,000 bond.
Johnson was arrested again in 2022 for failing to appear in court. During the court proceedings, the public defender’s office requested a psychological evaluation for Johnson. She was finally sentenced to the time she had previously served in prison.
