Erich Dea Boone, 49; Emanuel Alexander Pugh Jr., 27; Rommell Lavell Donald Harris, 36; Xavier Alexander Schlueb, 25; Shakur D. Brewer, 24; and Noble Gene Uylaki face felony charges after investigators say they each played a role in a coordinated assault on another inmate on September 12, 2025, inside the Lake County Jail in Crown Point that resulted in serious bodily injury.
Court records indicate that the inmate’s new facial injuries alerted corrections staff. A supervisor was notified via radio, and the detainee was then transferred to the hospital for treatment. According to investigators, the inmate said that his commissary, as well as the commissaries of other inmates in his housing unit, was extorted the day before the assault, and that he had been threatened previous to the incident.
According to probable cause affidavits, jail surveillance video captured Erich Dea Boone entering House 2 at approximately 5:56 a.m. with his head and face totally hidden in white linen and attacking the inmate before departing the housing unit. Investigators later identified Boone as the initial perpetrator.
According to court records, Noble Gene Uylaki entered House 2 around 6:06 a.m. and assaulted the inmate before departing. Investigators later witnessed Uylaki ordering all detainees to leave the housing unit, with the exception of the assaulted inmate. During this time, Shakur D. Brewer was spotted standing near the doorway of House 2, preventing the inmate from exiting and locking him within the housing unit alone. Investigators indicated that an unknown material was thrown from a cup into House 2 during this series of events.
According to the affidavits, Rommell Lavell Donald Harris and Uylaki later entered House 2 and assaulted the detainee simultaneously. During the ongoing assault, several inmates joined in, removed the inmate’s clothing, and attempted to take him out of House 2 and onto the inmate range, which was out of the camera’s view.
Investigators studied surveillance footage that showed Emanuel Alexander Pugh Jr. stomping on the inmate as the incident continued in the hallway. According to the affidavits, Pugh later returned to his bunk and removed his facial covering, revealing himself as the convict who was seen stomping on the victims.
Court records show that during the assault, Xavier Alexander Schlueb seized the inmate and assisted in hauling him into the hallway. Schlueb was also spotted entering the inmate’s cell and stealing many items from the inmate’s bunk following the assault.
According to investigators, after the convict returned to his cell, Uylaki returned and threatened to murder him if he left again. The inmate then admitted to investigators that he did not immediately disclose the incident due to fear.
Medical records reviewed throughout the investigation revealed that the convict had been treated for a periorbital contusion to his left eye, a stitched laceration above his left brow, a head injury, a neck ache, and a superficial injury to his left cornea.
After studying corrections records and jail surveillance video, investigators identified the six convicts who committed the assault as Boone, Pugh, Harris, Schlueb, Brewer, and Uylaki.
